Crack Filling vs. Sealcoating: What Does Your Driveway Need?

Crack filling treats individual cracks. Sealcoating covers the asphalt surface. Your driveway may need both. The right choice starts with its condition and the problem you want to address.

If you see cracks and a worn-looking surface, those are two things to discuss during an assessment.

What does each service do?

Crack filling targets suitable cracks in existing asphalt. Sealcoating applies a coating across the wider surface. When both are appropriate, crack treatment comes before coating.

Describe what you see: cracks near the garage, wear where you park, or changes since last winter. You do not need to know the service name before calling.

Will sealcoating take care of the cracks?

Cracks need their own assessment. Before agreeing to the work, check which cracks will receive separate treatment and whether that treatment is included in the estimate.

This also makes estimates easier to compare. A price for coating alone may cover different work from a price that includes crack filling and preparation.

What will my driveway look like afterward?

Set that expectation before the work starts. Ask whether treated cracks and existing texture will remain visible, and look at completed work on a driveway with similar conditions.

Point out the areas you most want addressed. That gives the conversation a clear starting point and helps you understand what the proposed work is intended to achieve.

What should I know before scheduling?

You should be able to answer four practical questions: What work is recommended? What preparation is included? What finish should I expect? When can I use the driveway again?

If you know when the driveway was last maintained, share that too. If you don't, start with its condition today.
